چکیده

Background Cardiac involvement with progressive myocardial fibrosis leading to dilated cardiomyopathy is a major cause of death in muscular dystrophy patients. Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) measurement based on T1-mapping preand post-contrast promises the detection of early “diffuse” myocardial fibrosis that cannot be depicted by conventional contrast-imaging based on late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). With this study, we evaluated the presence of diffuse myocardial fibrosis in regions of “normal” (LGEnegative) and “diseased” (LGE-positive) appearing myocardium as well as its relation to the extent of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and the occurrence of arrhythmias in Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) patients.

Myocardial fibrosis imaging based on T1-mapping and extracellular volume fraction (ECV) measurement in muscular dystrophy patients: diagnostic value compared with conventional late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging.

AIM Cardiac involvement with progressive myocardial fibrosis leading to dilated cardiomyopathy is a major cause of death in muscular dystrophy patients. Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) measurement based on T1-mapping pre- and post-contrast promises the detection of early 'diffuse' myocardial fibrosis that cannot be depicted by conventional contrast-imaging based on late gadolinium enhanceme...

Extracellular volume MRI increases the detection of myocardial abnormalities beyond late gadolinium enhancement - initial findings

Background Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) is excellent for identifying focal lesions in the myocardium (necrosis, fibrosis), but diffuse homogeneous abnormalities are not readily detectable. Quantitative measurement of the myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) fraction using MRI has recently been validated histologically, and implemented for parametric imaging in patients. We hypothesized th...

Native T1 values identify myocardial changes and stratify disease severity in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

BACKGROUND Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked, inherited disorder causing dilated cardiomyopathy with variable onset and progression. Currently we lack objective markers of the effect of therapies targeted towards preventing progression of subclinical cardiac disease. Thus, our aim was to compare the ability of native T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) measurements to differentiate...

In-vivo T1 cardiovascular magnetic resonance study of diffuse myocardial fibrosis in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

BACKGROUND In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), autopsy studies revealed both increased focal and diffuse deposition of collagen fibers. Late gadolinium enhancement imaging (LGE) detects focal fibrosis, but is unable to depict interstitial fibrosis. We hypothesized that with T1 mapping, which is employed to determine the myocardial extracellular volume fraction (ECV), can detect diffuse inters...

Histological Validation of measurement of diffuse interstitial myocardial fibrosis by myocardial extravascular volume fraction from Modified Look-Locker imaging (MOLLI) T1 mapping at 3 T

BACKGROUND Gadolinium (Gd) Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) has been proposed as a non-invasive method for assessment of diffuse myocardial fibrosis. Yet only few studies used 3 T CMR to measure ECV, and the accuracy of ECV measurements at 3 T has not been established. Therefore the aims of the present study were to validate measurement of ECV by MO...
